Samsung Motors recently announced the successful development of multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) designed for 16-volt high-voltage configuration vehicles. MLCC is an element used to control constant currents in electronic circuitry, widely employed in smartphones, personal computers, household appliances, 5G devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. With the introduction of various advanced technologies, the use of MLCC in the automotive sector is continuously growing.
Samsung Motors explained that they have successfully miniaturized key raw materials, dielectric ceramic powder, to a nano-level and achieved high capacity. By minimizing gaps within the dielectric, these multi-layer ceramic capacitors can operate normally under high voltage. Samsung Motors showcased two models of multi-layer ceramic capacitors. One is of the 0603 size, supporting a capacity of 100 nanofarads (nF), with dimensions of 0.6mm width and 0.3mm height. The other is of the 1608 size, supporting a capacity of 4.7 microfarads (uF), with dimensions of 1.6mm width and 0.8mm height.
These multi-layer ceramic capacitors are suitable for the core equipment gateway module of autonomous driving. The automotive gateway is a central system used to integrate and manage Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functions within the vehicle and securely transmit data. The introduction of these multi-layer ceramic capacitors provides a more reliable solution for electronic components in high-voltage configuration vehicles.
